John the Baptist had been baptizing people with water for some time. His dress and what he ate likened him to Elijah. But he proclaims that "one greater than he will come to baptize you in the Holy Spirit." He was sent to prepare the way for Christ and to prepare the people to receive Christ.

How often does God call us to tasks and a life that we do not feel worthy of? John the Baptist did not feel worthy. But he faithfully did his task and he was ready for Christ.

In this Lenten season we are to continually prepare ourselves for what Christ has for us to do. We should be meditating on God's word and listen for what he calls us to do. We are blessed to know the rest of the story. That makes it all the more important to follow Christ. We know better than the first hearers of Marks Gospel what Christ taught, how He lived, and what He promises us every day. He showed us a better way. Let’s spend Lent showing how much we love the Lord.

Lord, may I give you each & every day my love and my faithfulness. May I listen and follow you with my whole heart now and always.

Amen

Carol Bergmann

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Read Mark1:9-13

Temptation

Remember after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, he was empowered by the Holy Spirit, and was led into the wilderness. He fasted and prayed for forty days, and then he was tempted by the devil. It would have been easy for Jesus to yield to the temptation because he was hungry, but he did not. Jesus had to accomplish his mission on earth. Sometimes we take the easy way out and end up making the situation worse, or with some divine intuition we make the right choice and end up with joy.
As Christians we sometimes encounter difficult periods in our lives and succumb to temptations. Our instincts are so overpowering, that we depend on our own ability to find solutions for our problems. Then a bad situation becomes worse. It doesn’t matter how we got there. But most important is our response to the situation that defines the outcome. Situations occur in our lives as an opportunity for growth. God’s Holy Spirit dwells within us, and can be activated through prayer and fasting.
The Holy Spirit is there to protect us, so that we will not be tempted beyond our control. Gods’ presence living within us is the light that shines in our innermost being removing all temptations, and replacing with ideas that inspires us to be good. We are blessed and then become a blessing to others.

Heavenly Father help us not to succumb in the midst of a trial. Empower us with your Holy Spirit, so that we will be saved. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name I pray.

Amen.

Ellen Cort

Friday, February 19, 2010

Read Mark 1: 14-20

Jesus disciples were simplest of men. Their occupations were also simple. As we read this passage, we are to remember this Lenten season that God do not care who we are or what are occupations, because we all Jesus disciples. At this Lenten season, let us spread the word around that Jesus is alive and he died for us. We should all be messengers for Jesus by out actions to one another, and if we say we are Christians, people should see the Christianity in us. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ and we will inherit God’s Kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. For God so love the world that he gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Prayer

Heaven, of course, is what I see. He is confronted by a man possessed by a demon, who calls out to him, recognizing him as "the Holy one of God." Jesus rebukes the demon, or unclean spirit and tells him to be silent and leave the man - which he does. The onlookers are amazed. They have never seen anything like this in the synagogue. Who is this man who can even tell the demons what to do? Jesus' fame begins to spread immediately.

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of demon possession. I prefer to just think of people as being physically or emotionally ill, or even just plain odd. But, still I must admit that there are times when I think only messengers of evil can account for some behavior. If the definition of a demon is some force that turns us away from obeying, loving and worshipping God, then I have to admit that I am influenced by demons pointing me in the wrong direction.

Jesus commands the demon to come out of the man, but he does not rebuke the man, only his oppressor. Jesus can do the same for us, if we desire it and ask for his help.

Prayer: Lord, deliver us from evil. Help us to remember to lean on you to keep our demons at bay.

Howard Miles

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Read Mark 1: 29-39

Community

One of the things I noticed as I was reading and meditating on this scripture was how often in the gospels we are told that Jesus takes time to visit and be in community with others. Very shortly after calling Simon and Andrew he goes to stay at their house. I’ve been thinking a lot about community lately and how important it is. My cousin was recently diagnosed with cancer. As she goes through the fire, she has been using an online community called Caring Bridge that lets her connect with friends and family. I have found it to be a remarkable use of technology, giving her the comfort of knowing people from around the country and the world are praying for her, offering advice from their own experiences, and allowing her the space to tell her story as it happens. She has also mentioned how her faith community at her church in North Carolina has buoyed her up throughout, giving both spiritual and physical support.

I have been missing my own faith community lately. We have missed two Sundays and many between the Sundays meetings and ministries over the past couple of weeks as we deal with the phenomenal snow that God has sent our way. I don’t know what people do when they don’t have such a wonderful community to guide and support them as they go through life. I suppose many find a substitute of one kind of community or another but I can’t imagine a better group of people to associate with than my church family. I thank God for each and every one of the people that make up the community of faith.

Thank you, God, for the people of the community of faith that guide and support me. I pray that many more will be added to our community as they feel your love through us.

Martha Shrader

Monday, February 22, 2010

Read Mark 1:40-45

The love of Jesus Christ shines in this passage in several ways. First Jesus heals a man who most others would shun. His simple touch relieves the man of a sickness which plagued his life and forced him to be ostracized from society. Second, the man’s faith is what brings him to Jesus. His faith is so strong that he comes to Jesus to beg on his knees. He doesn’t ask if Jesus can make him clean, he says “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” He knows that Jesus has the power to cleanse him, and trusts Jesus to do so. Third, Jesus’ graceful response, “I am willing.” This willingness cost Jesus his freedom, but this was a sacrifice Jesus was willing to make. Jesus has the power to cleanse, forgive, and restore those who are hopelessly and helplessly caught up in their sin and can see no way out. He does that even when it means sacrifice. Forgiveness and restoration do not come free or easy. They often involve sacrifice and putting self second.

Prayer

Jesus I am grateful for your compassion and grace. Thank you for your willingness to cleanse and forgive, even those who are weighed down by sin. For a paralyzed man trying to get close enough to Jesus, this should have been a hopeless situation and the end of the story. However, the paralyzed man in this story was highly favored; he had the help of four men who were willing and determined to get him to Jesus so he may be healed. We don't know the names or the relationships of the four men to the paralyzed man. Were they his relatives? friends? neighbors? does it matter? They were four people who showed compassion on their fellow human being. They were also four men who had very strong faith in the healing power of Jesus Christ; so much so that they agreed collectively to take an unconventional risk of cutting through the roof (by any means necessary) to get the man to Jesus. The man was healed because verse 5 tells us that "Jesus seeing how much faith they had"

Sometimes in life we find ourselves in situations where we feel totally hopeless; much like the paralyzed man in this story, we know we cannot do anything by our own strength. We know we need help, but everything in our circumstance reflects only our helplessness and we begin to feel that there's no way out.
It is at times like these that we must remember as Christians that we serve a Mighty God, nothing shall be impossible with Him. We must pray for more faith, a stronger belief in a father who has continuously been there for us. Our God has promised never to leave nor forsake us. He will touch the hearts of all the people needed to help us in our time of need.

In the words of my favorite singer - Nicole C. He identifies people in need of salvation and communicate with them, sometimes even sharing meals with them while teaching them and opening their eyes to righteousness. These people, slaves to sin and doomed to eternal damnation, were lost to the glory of God and the laws handed down through Moses. Jesus reached out to them and offer to them salvation through grace. He did not shun them like the organized churches shunned them. He mingled with them and shared with them much to the disapproval of the religious leaders, who were more confused and hard hearted than the sinful masses who thirst for the knowledge of the one true and living God.

Jesus quickly pointed out that his mission was not to be locked away with religious leaders and Jews, but to save as many lost soul who would believe in him and be baptized into a new life. It was the sick (sinner) who needed a physician (Jesus, the I am) not religious scribes and Pharisees, (Mark 2:17). It was not profitable to teach the scribes and Pharisees about God, because they already studied the scripture. However, the sinners who does not know God and did not follow the laws handed down through Moses, needed to be taught. They were the new wineskins receiving new wine (the word of God).

Let us follow Jesus’ example and reach out to non-christians in our community, by sharing the good news and our faith stories with them. Let us become contagious Christians, whereby we can reach our non-christian neighbors in ways that we couldn’t reach them if we tried forcing them into church and preaching to them.

Father in Heaven, thank you for your words in the scriptures and for putting on flesh to the word in Jesus Christ our Lord and savior. His life and stories are lessons well taught and we pray that you give us the courage and the strength to go out and live what we‘ve learnt in Jesus name. He allows his disciples to pick grain on the Sabbath, and He heals on the Sabbath. He reminds the religious leaders of their history and states clearly that “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” With that the Pharisees began to plot His death.

Our first thoughts may be that these scriptures remind us that we are not slaves to our doctrines, laws, rules, and regulations if it means that the elderly, homeless, hungry, infirm, poor, etc., will not be cared for. Secondly, we may think of the present quagmire in the U.S. Congress over Health Care Reform. Surely, no matter how we feel about Health Care Reform, we need to continue to call and write our representatives to remind them that they cannot allow what they cannot do to keep them from doing what they can. They and we must do all we can to ensure we do not become indifferent to human need. We all must look beyond the barriers that face us and do the right thing. Reading on in these scriptures, we see even more.

In the last part, after healing the man’s hand, Jesus withdrew to the lake where He asked the disciples to have a boat waiting in case the crowd became too large. As He healed people, evil spirits recognized Him and called Him the Son of God. Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell who He was. So, we see Jesus making preparations then taking on hard tasks and making sure that He would not get the credit.

The lessons for us are to know our history, to prepare ourselves to help others, and to make sure what we do actually help people and do not leave them helpless. We need to help in the name of God the Father without expecting fame, gain, reward, etc.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your loving Son Jesus the Christ who died for us that we would have eternal life. May we carry that memory with us throughout this Lenten season and always, and may our actions always bring honor to your holy name. Amen

Janis G. It is a time of reflection, a time of repentance and a time to rededicate one’s self to the will of God and his purposes in one’s life. We cannot continue to live in sin and expect an abundance of his love.

Let us imagine that Jesus Christ went on the hillside to pray and make a special list of his appointed, close associates, friends, brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers while we are waiting at the foot of the hill. Will your name or mine be there? Yes, let us get ready to listen to the names. His expectations are high. He needs someone who will: 1) continue to be with him always meaning that we must represent him by being Christlike - we must try to be pure, holy, speak kind words, be fair at all times; 2) Be sent out to preach - are we ready to go far and near to take up missionary work preaching not only to Christians but sharing the good news with unbelievers; 3) have authority and power to heal the sick - we have to pray seriously to God for his grace and be prepared to search for the physically and spiritually sick to heal them; 4) have authority and power to drive out demons - are we bold enough or is anyone prepared to drive out demons in the name of Jesus.

These are a few things we need to spend this Lenten season preparing for. We need the special grace of God to count us worthy of the above assignments that God has for us. Then and only then will God rename us as he did Saul to Paul.

We pray.
Susan Osifade

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Read Mark 4:1-20

Often we think of God’s grace as something God chooses to give to us at particular times and in particular circumstances. We have a need for assurance, or for healing, or for financial relief and so we pray for God to apply His grace right here, right now. If what we want happens, we give God the glory. But that is not the image Jesus gives in this parable. The farmer in this parable throws out seed, His gracious Word, willy-nilly, seeming to be careless of the results. The question in this parable is not whether God is raining down grace that could produce fruit in our lives. He is. The question is whether we can receive it, and whether we can retain it. Is our soil prepared for God’s gracious Word to take root and grow strong or is it full of rocks and weeds? There is an implicit threat in Jesus’ story, especially for us in the Church. The Word of God can be planted in our hearts, and it still comes to nothing. We can accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and still not produce fruit, still wither, still be choked off. During Lent we ask ourselves, “What is keeping our faith shallow?” “What weeds have we allowed to grow up?” “Are we prepared to let the Word grow in us despite persecution, despite the cares of the world, despite the lure of wealth, despite the desire for fame, power, or popularity?” The good news is that God has not stopped sowing seed. He is tossing it to the wind. God’s grace is being poured out right now. Jesus, the Word made flesh, continues to press on the surface of our heart. Will He take deep root this time? How is the soil?

Prayer: God, break up the hard soil of our hearts. Let your Word sink in, take root, and produce fruit for the sake of your Kingdom.

Amen.

Scott Kisker

Sunday, February 28, 2010

Read Mark 4:21-29

Are we ashamed of Christ?
Do we hide when we read our bible?
Do our coworkers know we’re Christians?
Do we have to tell people we are Christians or do our actions speak?

As I prayed & meditated on the scriptures I had to stop & thank God for the beautiful gifts he has given everyone of us. I had to thank him because no two gifts are alike but we all have a very precious gift from God.

How often do we neglect that special gift & keep it under the bed, never letting it blossom or bear fruit. How often do we make excuses not to use our special gifts? How often do we compare our gift to others never realizing we have a priceless diamond inside of us.
How often do we deny we have the gift?

Going deeper into the passage I had to ask myself, are we secretly doing things when we think nobody is watching? Are we a Christian on Sunday, but somebody completely different the rest of the week? Are we wearing different masks everywhere we go? Have we forgotten that our Father in Heaven sees it all even our deepest secrets & thoughts?

I imagine how bright the world would be if we decided to lift the bed up, take our gift out & let the whole world see the light!
Imagine our light shining everywhere we went!
Imagine if our light started to attract others to Christ!
Imagine if we never compared our gift to others, but instead thank God for the gift He has given us, and rejoice in the gift He gives others!
Imagine if we used our gifts to build up the church!
Imagine if we tried our best to walk with Christ everyday & not just Sundays!
Imagine if we let our light shine as we helped the homeless & pray for the sick!
Imagine our light shining & nothing & nobody could turn it off!
Imagine if we were united a million Christian strong with our light shining!
Wow how powerful would all that light be united together!

Imagine if we didn’t make a commitment for Advent, Lent, New Years, but instead made a commitment 7days a week 365 days a year to walk with Christ & let our light shine.

Everyone loves to open gifts, I wonder why sometimes we won’t open the best gift in the world? How can we deny the gift when Christ has told us we have this gift? A gift that only comes from the Lord, A gift that the world didn’t give you and can never take it away! How can we let such a precious gift go to waste?

I think its time we check our personal lamp
Is your lamp shining for the world to see?
Is your lamp a little dusty & need to be cleaned?
Is your lamp hidden under the bed & no one can see it?
Or perhaps your lamp needs a new bulb all together?

Best thing is we can call on the name of Jesus, He is the light of the world. Walking with Christ we will be walking in eternal light, knowing no two lamps are the same, but no lamp is better than another.

I am going to check my lamp, I pray you check yours too.
God Bless

Sharon Milton

Monday, March 1, 2010

Read Mark 4:30-41

The period of Lent directs us to self-reflection and penitence with an eye to preparing us for what we know lies ahead for our Lord. The two subheadings of this reading in Mark are," The Parable of the Mustard Seed" and "Jesus Calming the Storm." It helps me to imagine myself among the disciples following Jesus, listening to the way he speaks to the crowds in parables... and being in the boat on the Sea of Galilee with the wind whipping and Jesus asleep in the hold. My sense in these two passages is that Jesus is a little frustrated with his disciples. He has to explain things in detail to them when he thinks surely they should understand what the parables really mean. He is expecting and hoping that the onlookers will "get it" without a blow by blow description of the parables - yet he patiently explains their meaning to his inner circle. And when they wake him in the boat and berate him for not caring about their safety... Jesus rebukes the wind and the sea, but there is an edge and frustration when he says to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" There are a number of times in reading Mark that I think Jesus has cause to despair that his chosen disciples will ever really "get it." Will they, will we ever really see what he wants of us and more... will we ever step up and do it? I am so grateful that Jesus doesn't give up on his disciples... even if they fail to "get it," even if they sometimes still have no faith.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the example of steadfast love and patience we have in Jesus.

Amen

Jan Miles

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Read Mark 5: 1-20

This is one powerful passage for me, scary in so many ways, but at the same time so very liberating!! I am sure there are many of you that will feel the same way if you just let go and let God in as you read it.

For me the evil spirits were alcohol, poverty, homelessness, and depression. It did not matter what people did, I was not going to be stopped. I started drinking at the age of 11, and I had teachers, counselors, and even juvenile officers that tried to get me to stop, it wasn’t happening. This lifestyle is what brought me to living on the streets. I slept in tents, boarded up buildings and strangers houses, friends tried to step in but I wasn’t having any part of it. I was the victim of rape because all the man needed to do was offer me a drink and said he had a house I could rent, I just needed to go to his house to sign papers, people told me no, alcohol told me go for it. But then someone who truly cared for me and was not ashamed of what I had become, told me I needed to be in church, and after going a few times, Jesus reached down into my heart, told me I was His child, He loved me no matter where I had been or what I had done and all He wanted from me was to say Yes, I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. And that is just what I did, and the chains were broken: I have been alcohol free for almost 18 years, (this includes anything made with alcohol), I have a roof over my head and 2 jobs plus going to school, and even though she was conceived as the result of the rape, a daughter that rocks my world!! Plus my son loves me and will do anything for me and his sister no matter what.

So, next time you see someone going through some of these things just go ahead a take a moment and let them know the chains can be broken!!!!!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for breaking so many chains for us, and for being there all the time. As we encounter others who need chains broken stop us in our tracks and be our words to help them break their chains.

Amen

Cindy Harding

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Read Mark 5:21-34

Healing Jairus’ daughter and a woman with a hemorrhage

Background: This passage is the first 2 parts of a Mark’s sandwich, a literary device in 3 parts of the form ABA. Story A begins, is interrupted by story B and then story A is completed. Mark evidently uses this device for comparison and contrast and to convey meaning beyond that of either story separately.

Commentary: As the passage begins Jesus (probably with his disciples) returns to the west side of the Sea of Galilee, the Jewish side. Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, begs Jesus to heal his daughter, who was at the point of death and Jesus goes with him. On the way Jesus feels a touch at his cloak which the disciples find hard to believe because he is surrounded by a crowd. The woman with the hemorrhage finds that she is healed by this touch and confesses. Jesus addresses her as daughter (a comparison with Jairus’ daughter?) and attributes her healing to her faith. The woman’s illness had made her an outcast by purity laws but Jesus addresses her as family. Her social status seems to be Mark’s deliberate contrast with that of Jairus. Is this anticipation that the last in social status will be first in the Kingdom of God?

Reflection for Lent: How do I meet and greet those of obviously lower social status? Do I see Jesus in those I talk with?

Prayer: Lord, thanks for Mark’s word and your gift of Jesus. Like many of us, Jairus, one of the synagogue rulers, had a problem that he wanted Jesus to address; his daughter was sick and dying. He sought Jesus to solve his divesting situation. However, Jesus knew Jairus’ concern and told him to “believe.” Jesus healed his daughter without anyone knowing it. Jesus even performed another miracle on His way to Jairus’ house.
As Jesus approached Jairus’ house He observed the wailing and mourning that was taking place outside of Jairus’ house and Jesus told the crowd that the girl was not dead but just asleep. He dismissed the crowd and went to the child’s side and told her to “get up.”
How often do we look to Jesus for help and not realize that our prayers have been answered without us even knowing it! Jesus says to us today the same thing that He said to Jairus in days of old: Believe.

Amen

Prayer:
Dear God, Help us to remember that Jesus is always with us and will help us even when we are not aware that He’s present.

Peace, Love and Joy,
Pastor Guy

Friday, March 5, 2010

Read Mark 6:1-29.

Ticker tape parades mark the return of successful athletes to their hometowns. Yet, Jesus, the Son of God was not received in Nazareth with such celebration. Jesus had just returned to Nazareth after teaching crowds of people, raising Jairus’s daughter from death and healing the hemorrhaging woman. Although He was treated with reverence in other parts of the country, He was treated with skepticism by the Nazarenes. Jesus lamented that “a prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown…” Although He spoke with wisdom and power, the Nazarenes were more concerned that his origins were from the working class and not from royalty and, as a result they rejected His teachings.

How are we like the Nazarenes? Often we reject friendship from people that we consider to be “too different from us” without recognizing how God may use them in our lives. Unfortunately because of the Nazarene’s rejection, Jesus was unable to do any mighty miracles for the very people who should have loved Him the most. How much of God’s blessings have we blocked when we reject people and situations because we do not approve of their “packaging”? By doing so we rob ourselves of the goodness that God seeks to pour into our lives.

Jesus instructed the disciples on how to deal with rejection. First he encouraged them to go out in pairs. This underscores the importance of partnering with fellow Christians for accountability and support. He also encouraged them to “travel light”. When we are spreading the news of the gospel we should free ourselves from the distraction of those things that would hinder our ability to focus on imparting the message to others – or that might similarly distract the listener from our hearing our message. Finally, if our message is rejected, we must have the courage to walk away from the situation, relinquishing control to God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please free us from our prejudices so that we would be able to receive the blessings that you are trying to bestow upon us. Please also show us how to be a blessing to others and grant us the humility to shake the dust off our feet, when your Word is rejected.

Amen.

Marcia Cort

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Read Mark 6:30-44

No matter where Jesus went, the people followed him. They are hungry for the word as well as for food and Jesus gives them both with leftovers!

As we journey through Lent, let us not be wandering aimlessly but with purpose to hear and feed on the word of God through the son, Jesus. Let us prepare ourselves by reading, studying and praying so that when Easter comes we will truly be ready to celebrate the resurrection. What were they really terrified of? The storm and the fear of drowning or was it the fear of coming face to face with a ghost? Not just any ghost, but one that looks like the same Jesus that just finished feeding over 5000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. Mark is quick to point out that they didn’t quite believe what to make of Jesus, that their hearts were “hardened”, therefore, they still didn’t believe that he was going to be the savior of mankind.

Was Jesus really intending to “pass them by”? Was he planning on leaving them in their troubles even though, he came to the sea because He knew they were in trouble? No brothers and sisters, Jesus’ intention was for them and us to see Him in His glory and recognize that He is Lord in flesh. To accept that He is OUR SAVIOR and that once we come to accepting His out stretched hand, our eyes will be opened to see God walking amongst them and us. Jesus calmed them down by saying “Take heart, it is I…” What a way to connect the Lord of their forefathers and the burning bush experience to the Lord that was standing in front of them now walking on water and feeding thousands of people with very little.

We need the Jesus who lived the life we could NOT live, so He could die the death WE SHOULD HAVE died, in order to grant us the grace to live eternally in fellowship with Him!

Amen.

Valrie Hames

Monday, March 8, 2010

Read Mark 7:1-23

When I was a child, I remember running in from outside. Something smells good I said, while lifting the lid from the pot. My Grandma would yell, you better go wash your hands, and please use soap! As I returned to the kitchen table, I asked Big Mama, “ Don't you wash the food before you cook it?” She would say yes. When we say grace and bless the food that makes it safe right? She said yes. So why do we need to wash our hands? She smiled and replied, “Because I said so.”
Traditions: The Pharisees didn't like the way the disciples washed their hands. They had a whole ritual planned for them passed down from the elders, but the disciples washed their hands and went on to eat. The Pharisees then questioned Jesus, and Jesus said, “Your fellowship with God is not interrupted by outwardly stuff, all the evil comes from inside the heart.” It doesn't matter how clean your hands or food is, that doesn't keep you from God, it's SIN.

Prayer: Father God help us to remember tradition while keeping our focus on you. Initially, I could not understand the significance of this woman’s reply to Jesus for him to reward her by healing her daughter. Then, in the mist of me having an interesting conversation with my sister on the subject of religion and Christians, I realized the lesson in this story. The essence of this woman’s response is the same reason Jesus came down to die for our sins. When the woman responded with “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs” she was saying, yes, I agree that the children should eat and they are important but the dogs are just as important too. Logically, dogs are lower than humans but some people treat their dogs just like it was one of their children. When Jesus came and died for our sins, he didn’t just come for all the people who are saved, he came especially for the unsaved. In his eyes, we are all the same. He does not discriminate by age, race, religion or color. He loves us all and that is what he wants us to do for others. As Christians, we have to stop thinking so highly of ourselves because in God’s eyes we are all the same. In God’s eyes we are all sinners whether we are saved or not. The message I would like for you to keep in mind for today is to humble yourself and do not be quick to disregard someone just because they may not be at the same level you are, whether it is in societal standards or in their walk with Christ. Reason being that, you really don’t know who or what situation God will use to administer your blessing.

Tanya Bayoh

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Read Mark 7:31-37

My first thought after reading this scripture was of the humility of Christ. After healing the deaf man, he told the disciples not to tell any. He quietly went about his work of healing the lame and preaching God's word. He didn't need to be recognized for his great works. In the same way, he humbly went to the cross to give up his life for you and me. As we prepare for Good Friday and Easter Sunday, we need to remember his gift to us.

My second thought after reading this scripture was of how my ears (like those of the deaf man in the story) have been opened to the ways of God. I have always believed in God. My grandparents were missionaries and my mother was a church choir director, so I always went to church. But little by little, through the years, my eyes and my ears have been opened to His truths. A big factor in this growth has been through Disciple Bible study. About ten years ago, Doris Judd invited me to join her Disciple I Bible group. Then she invited me to Disciple II and III and IV. I couldn't turn her down (God had opened her mouth in a convincing way). Through these studies my understanding of the Bible grew and my knowledge of God's will became more clear. Just as the ears of the blind man were opened, my ears were opened. As I attempt to also open my mouth and share my experience in this devotional, I pray for you, that your eyes and ears will be opened to His will for you.

Prayer: "Open my ears that I may hear, voices of truth Thou sendest clear ... Open my mouth and let me bear, gladly the warm truth everywhere."

Amen

Laura Winters

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Read Mark 8:1-21

In the gospel of Mark chapter eight verses one through twenty-one, Jesus feeds four thousand with seven loaves and a few fishes. He warned His disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod.

Leaven is an "agent of fermentation or a pervasive influence that produces a significant change". Leaven (yeast), is usually a symbol for corruption in the New Testament. If a person uses a small amount of leaven, it could ferment and affect the whole (mat.13:33). In the Old Testament, leaven is not used in a metaphorically sense. It was used in general in making bread. The Israelis were forbidden to use leaven for seven days at the time of Passover (Ex.12:8).

As symbol for corruption in the new testament, Jesus used the word "leaven" to indicate that the leaven of the Pharisees refers to their religious traditions by which they turned God's word in the opposite direction to suit their own practices(mat.16:6,11). Many Biblical scholars identified the leaven of Herod with that of the Sadducees. It refers to a spirit of worldliness.

The disciples of Jesus are identified as discipline human kind following him in a relationship with a task to fulfill or bring into light His teachings.
In the passage reviewed, Jesus' disciples followed Him in the way of duty. As they followed him, they knew that they were being empowered with leadership skills that would enable them to win others to Christ.

Occasionally, many others followed Jesus for different reasons. At this time, they were with Him three days, and had nothing to eat. This reminds us as followers of Christ, that there are times when we have to go through hardships in the way of duty.

In the way of duty, Jesus is the compassionate leader with sympathy, even though true zeal makes nothing of hardships in the way of duty, He desires that we stay in His sound teachings, while He provides a way for us to get out of our hardships. God thank you for your sympathy and care.

Amen.

Rev. Robert J. There were probably lots of fisherman plying their trade and perhaps there was a healthy market. I don't know much about this home of three apostles (Andrew, Peter and Philip) but the Son of God saw fit to visit it and give us a glimpse of His power.
When you read this passage you may wonder at why this miracle played out this way. Certainly Jesus could have healed the blind man at a word or a single touch. And why did He take him out of the village? I don't know for sure but sometimes healing takes a little time and sometimes we have to get away with Jesus for the healing to come. We may want some great, dramatic miracle but healing, whether instantly or gradually is a miracle and comes from the hand of our God.

This blind man was brought to Jesus by some people. They no doubt had seen or heard about the feeding of the four thousand and the healing of the woman with the issue of blood so they knew what the Rabbi could do. But imagine their disappointment when Jesus led the man away without their having the privilege of seeing the miracle. Did they want to see the healing due to their compassion for the man or just see a miracle. I don't know but Jesus did heal the man. Not instantly or with fanfare in front of a crowd but He did heal him and there He gives us another reason to hope and believe in Him.

PRAYER

Thank You Father for the gift of healing. You are called Jehovah Rophe and we bow down with gratitude for Your healing touch in our lives. Remember Your children who stand in need of Your healing touch; whether mind, body or soul and help us to never give up hope in Your promises. He was born into German privilege. Grand houses, grand friends, grand art, grand educations and achievement, and grand parties were the staples of his upbringing. Why at such a young age he chose theology as a profession is anyone’s guess, for he was essentially unchurched. Moreover, Bonhoeffer thought little about the concept of church until the latter years of his theology studies.

Yet, Bonhoeffer became a powerful witness for Christ who proclaimed shortly before his death in 1945, “In Jesus, God has said Yes and Amen to it all and that Yes and Amen is the firm ground on which we stand.” This proclamation captures the essence of Bonhoeffer’s extraordinary journey. He dared to cast aside his bourgeois identity to minister to the destitute. He dared to immerse himself in the Sunday morning services of Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church when segregation was at the heart of American social policy. He dared to challenge the ecumenical movement of the 1930s to recognize the universality of the church and to fight for world peace wherever needed. He dared to rail against Germany’s churches as they succumbed to Nazism and anti-Semitism. He dared to join the German Resistance Movement as a double agent. He dared ultimately to reject two decisive opportunities to avoid the Nazi gallows. He dared to leave behind a powerful body of writings that decades later strip us naked and challenge us to wrestle with the question: “Who do You say that I am?” In my view, Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the greatest theologian the world has ever known!

Prayer: Father, may we daily take on the cross of Jesus Christ as we strive to be and to act.

Mary Carter-Williams, Ph.D.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Read Mark 9:2-13

Wow! How wonderful is must have been to see Jesus transfigured on the mountain. I’m sure that Peter, James, and John had no idea what they were about to witness when Jesus took them up the mountain, apart from everyone else. I believe that Jesus had confidence in these three, knowing that they would be able to handle what they were about to see. You have Elijah and Moses appearing with Jesus as he shows himself in His glory, and you have the voice of God coming from a cloud, telling them that this is His beloved son, in whom He is well pleased; listen to Him. That had to be a lot to take in at one moment, which is probably why Peter didn’t know what to say, except that they could pitch a few tents and stay awhile.

Jesus needed to show Peter, James, and John this because He wanted them to know that no matter what was about to happen to Him, how He would have to suffer, how He would be beaten and betrayed, how He would be handed over to be crucified, how it may seem that everything would be lost in defeat, He has already won the battle. Jesus shows them that His transfiguration is the victory. They will leave that mountain having witnessed something that we today will only see when Jesus returns.
Friends, when you are reminded of the suffering that Jesus endured this Lenten season, remember the Transfiguration, for this event is when he showed us that He already won.

Prayer

Lord, we take pleasure in knowing that the battle has already been won. By faith, all things are possible.

This man had asked Jesus’ disciples to cast out this spirit, but they were unable to do so. When he sees Jesus, he runs to him and asks “if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” Jesus responds in the next verse (23), “If You can? All things are possible to him who believes.” Jesus casts out the evil spirit, and the boy was healed. The disciples couldn’t understand why they were unsuccessful, and Jesus says to them in verse 29, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”

In life, we have to have faith. God is always in control, and He can indeed move mountains. Sometimes, we want to take matters into our own hands and try to handle things on our own. That’s when we mess up.

Faith allows us to cast our cares on Him, and let Him work it out. Faith is strengthened through prayer and fasting. Communicating with God daily about our joys, our concerns, our problems, our desires, whatever is on our mind...and then taking the time to listen intently to God’s response, and His guidance.

The disciples were too busy arguing over who was the greatest while they were in that crowd. They tried to handle things all on their own, and failed. The man came to Jesus for help. “I do believe;” he said, “help my unbelief.” Faith set the boy free.

So no matter what you might be going through, have faith, and know that God is in control.

PRAYER: Lord, help us to keep You first in our lives. Help us to trust and obey You, and be faithful disciples. Guide us in our faith walk, and help us to grow in faith. We honor and praise you Lord, for You are worthy of all the praise!

Gregory Richards

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Read Mark 9:38-50

These are critical times. President Obama can not seem to do enough to right all the wrongs. Tiger Woods, whose sin is openly exploited, has gone into hiding. Others are being lamented for reaching out to Haiti while the homeless live in our streets. In general, people are tired, poor, scared and sick. How easy it is to become bitter, to find fault, to bear grudge, to back stab in a world that lowers our expectations and fails us.

But have you ever been around someone who holds on to all the perceived ills, the flaws, the missteps of others? It could be a small hurt, a bit of jealousy, maybe just because. Resentment grows, sucking the life out and tainting everyone it touches. It festers, old and ugly. It crowds out the healthy, vital you-- like an infection. Imagine what the world would be if God chose not to look on our sins. Instead he offers the cure.

If we are to enter into new life, we must “amputate” self. In new life it is better to be handicapped and hopeful than to perish from a hardened heart. Challenges just season us. And, how we use them makes all the difference. The salt of God’s people lends itself not to judgment and pecking one another but to forgiveness, patience, kindness and love. We can simply lay down hostility and encourage one another when we release all pain to God.

Yulanda Swindell

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Read Mark 10:1-16

“And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:16)

The movie theater was packed with squirming, fidgety and chattering teens when I took Kara, Katie and six of their friends to the movies recently. I realized that seeing a popular teen movie that came out that Friday night was probably a mistake. I thought I should just go to another movie in the next theater.

I prayed things would settle down. I wasn’t so sure. It had been a exhausting week. The kids had been off from school with all the snow. I had hoped to relax! Finally the film started and, amazingly, the teens stopped their loud talking and laughing and settled down to watch. Every now and then I’d hear a child whisper “wow” or “I just love this”. The preshow chaos turned into ninety minutes of giggles, spontaneous applause and peels of laughter. I caught myself laughing loudly right along with them.

I left the theater feeling rejuvenated. The film had been funny and entertaining, but it was the presence of the children that really lifted my spirit. My grandmother used to say that being in the presence of a child is like sitting with the angels. So until the time comes I guess I’ll be going to lots of teen movies!

During this Lenten season take the time to enjoy all the children in your life and bless them as Jesus blesses us.

Carrie Hibler

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Read Mark 10: 17 – 34

In today’s world of airline travel, we have all had experiences and instructions on how much baggage is allowed as we fly from place to place if even it is just for one day. We pack all the things we believe we must have with us on our journey. At times our packing results in more weight than allowed and we willingly pay the extra costs just not to be separated from our stuff. We are allowed to take part of our luggage which we never separate from as carry on, and a claim ticket for the remainder when we arrive at our destination. If our luggage did not arrive, we are also likely to feel disgusted and unhappy.

What a shock it must have been when Jesus told the rich young man, “Go and sell everything you have, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come and follow me”. The young man was promised a treasure in heaven but he became sorrowful after being asked to part with his wealth. Giving up wealth, personal freedoms, and status to serve others seem too great a price for many people. The rich young man did not ask another salvation question, but some of the disciples who did not quite understand what Jesus meant sought clarification from Him.

Jesus is only interested in our hearts, not our belongings, baggage or status. He calls us and invites us to share his kingdom, where we will have life forever, and blessings one hundred times more than we could have on earth. He gave his life for us and all He wants in return is our love and obedience. The moral of the lesson is that we give to get. It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20: 35). By sacrificing the treasures of this world, we will be rewarded many times more in heaven. Our earthly possessions should not come between us and God.

Jesus reminds us to serve others.

Ray Beache

Friday, March 19, 2010

Read Mark 10: 35 – 52

IT’S FAITH AND TALENT UNITED TO SERVE HUMANITY.

I will like to view this devotional as a “two-in-one” case, and approach it as such.

PART ONE: Faith is the guiding, unseen principle that gets our God’s attention when we ask anything of him, in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. However, we are differently gifted, and just about all responses from God are based on that fact. That not withstanding, we are required to use our Gifts in the service of humanity, and not use it in expectation of services from humanity. For instance, when we go to a Dentist, we expect his/her services, and not the other way round. But a Dentist is also pre-ordained by God.
The same is true of a Priest who must minister to the Congregation, while it is a mistake for most of the Congregation to expect to be Priests. The Almighty God, when you trust in him, can make you the best Priest or Dentist that you can be. Again, make no mistakes about it: asking God to heal you of any ailment, or for money to pay those Bills, is different from asking God to make you a Priest. Over time, the first 2 are in all likelihood guaranteed to actualize, while the latter is a different matter rooted in the aforementioned reason.

PART TWO: This case of our Lord Jesus Christ healing a blind beggar is purely one demonstration of faith in motion. When you ask God of what you want, your demands will be met, no matter how seemingly “delayed” his response might look.

In all, Faith, coupled with persistence, is the key to everything of interest.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, teach us to have more faith in God, and to be of service to each other as fellow human beings dependent on each other, too.

Amen.

Collins Ezebuihe

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Read Mark 11:1-11

As I read this passage, a key reminder enters my mind. It is something that should be shown throughout a Christian’s everyday life. Without it, Jesus never would have saved us from sin. Humility. In the bible, humility is praised in several situations. In this specific reading, Jesus asks his disciples to go before him and get the tied-up colt. During these times a great leader would usually ride on a horse, the powerful steed that could only be tamed by its commander. The horse signified power, strength and royalty. But Jesus chose the young colt, which in those times was a mere farmhand. Jesus remained humble as he sat on the colt and rode it to the entrance of Jerusalem. Even though he was riding a colt, a crowd surrounded him shouting “Hosanna!” and praising him. If some of us were in this position we would have jumped off the colt and began bowing broadly, taking in the crowd. Or maybe some would pump their fists in the air, beaming at the crowd as they praised us. All of these things show how we are vain and conceited on the inside. Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple to pray as he simply looked around. He then left and went out to Bethany. We must remember to humble ourselves, as Jesus did, and God will smile down upon us. Another thing we must remember is to give all the glory and all the praise to our father, who art in heaven. Jesus did not take in the crowd and the praise; instead it all went to God. If we can remember to do these two crucial things in our lives, we will be that much closer to living just like Jesus.

Prayer

Dear Lord, Thank you for all that you do in my everyday life. Please help me to remember to give you all the praise, that as I decrease you may increase.

Amen

Devona Quasie-Woode

Sunday, March 21, 2010

Read Mark 11:15-19

Pondering and meditating:

That was a bold move on the part of Jesus. They knew what he had been doing. He healed the deaf and the blind and the woman who bled; he cast out devils, he restored life to dead people; he ate with sinners and ignored Sabbath rules; he accused the scribes and Pharisees of hypocrisy and insisted that a real leader must be a servant to others. Finally, when Jesus came into Jerusalem for the last time, he came as Zechariah had predicted the Messiah would come - riding on a donkey, and the people shouting Hosanna. (Save us!)
The scribes and Pharisees knew the scriptures. They knew well Isaiah’s image of the humble servant who would save Israel. They knew that Jesus’ words and actions linked him to Isaiah’s servant and implied a special relationship with God. He was a threat to them, to their power, to their way of life. They had to stop him. So they demanded to know by what authority he acted. Today we would ask, “Who do you think you are?”

Jesus saw the trap and asked, “Who do you think John the Baptist was?” Now they were trapped. If they answered, “He was a nobody,” then the people would be angry, because John, like his cousin, had many followers among the poor and the powerless. But if they answered, “He was a messenger of God,” then Jesus might ask, “Well then, why didn’t you listen to him?”
So Jesus let the Pharisees and scribes know that if they could not humbly consider the relevance and validity of John’s words, they surely were not ready to question his.

Prayer

Lord, let us be both humble and bold, like John and Jesus, when we respond to your grace.

Peter Loan

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Read Mark 12: 1-17

Some writers interrupted the parable of the tenant farmers this way: the man who planted the vineyard is God, the tenant farmers are Israel’s religious leaders, the servants are the prophets and the priests who remain faithful to God; the son is Jesus.
For me I see God’s people in both the character of the servant and the tenant farmer. The servants are sent out time and time again to collect the fruit of the vineyard. Many are sent. None turned back or go another way. They continue to go to the vineyard. They were beaten, insulted and killed until there was only one left to send – the owner’s beloved son. Surely they will respect my son, thought the owner. But the tenant farmers don’t waver either. They not only do not want to share the fruits of the vineyard time and time again. They want to keep everything for themselves.

This parable teaches us that God gives us many chances to serve him. Often we are not committed to each opportunity given to us and tire easily, lose strength and give up. God has also entrusted you and me as stewards of his vineyard (our church, family and our very life). God Blesses us with many fruits but often like tenant farmers, we want to keep it all. We make excuses for not actively showing more compassion, not helping the needy or sharing our gifts and talents.
In the second parable the religious leaders, who are trying to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested and killed, ask Jesus – is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Jesus avoided the trick question by showing that believers have dual responsibility. Caesar and God. Our nation requires that we pay for the services and benefits we receive. God requires our commitment to serve and stewardship over all He has given us.

Prayer

Dear God we thank you that the stone the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone of our faith. The passage reminds us to focus on the essence of life and love, as reflected in Christ’s admonition to the Sadducees. Jesus’ suffering demonstrates the ultimate love. Such love! The theme of Love is central in our relationship with God and man. Love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbors as ourselves. Jesus calls us to let go our obsession with worldly materials and matters; to concentrate less on earthly trivial pursuits and seek to love God unconditionally and our fellow human beings selflessly.

Prayer

Lord, help us to rediscover you, not just this season, but everyday and reposition our hearts and minds on spiritual growth and love for our fellow men. Diminish our love for self, so that we may better appreciate your love for us as we aspire to love you and others as we love ourselves. Amen

Francis S. For me, Jesus Christ is my Savior, the only One who lived on this earth without sin, yet died for my sins, and was resurrected so that I can have life eternal.

Jesus warns us about some leaders who use His name for personal satisfaction. His promise to us who are mislead by these leaders is that they punishment will be severe. To help us avoid such leaders, Jesus has given us a study guide – The Bible. Everything we need to know is already in this Book. If we read and study the Bible everyday and join groups who discuss the Word then we will be more knowledgeable of its content and be alert to false teachings and pretenses.

This passage ends with Jesus asking us if we personally, really know the reason why we give to His ministries. Is it out of being self-righteous and being proud or is it out of being humble, sincere, and thankful for all He has done for us? Remember Jesus doesn’t need our earthly gifts - great or small- for Him to decide if we will be with Him when he comes again. When we give of our tithes and talents to help the work of Christ we must do so with honor, grace, and love, remembering what we are giving back is a very small portion of what is continually given to us.

Prayer: Father we pray for understanding of your Word and commitment to your way of living. As we are touched by death and illness we still don't seem to grasp the wonder of it all. Are we being led astray? Are the wars and earthquakes which result in homelessness, anguish, hunger & sorrow an omen from this passage? Or, have we become immune to what is happening around us so we are not alarmed? Do we spread the gospel like Jesus asked the disciples to do? Are we still in the beginning of the birth-pangs or have we progressed to the delivery? For myself I believe I have progressed passed the delivery, to my infant stage. Eager to learn.

Prayer

Lord helps me your infant child to progress past the infant stage and learn to walk like you each day. Many of these issues are not only realities of the past; they remain realities of our present times. Thank God, the Good News does not shy away from the difficult issues of life. In fact, it is during such times of difficulty and tribulation we find hope in God’s nearness and the true and everlasting Word. The sense of urgency can encourage us to be watchful, alert, faithful and fruitful until the promised return of Jesus Christ. Until then the Good News of God’s Word, encourage us not to become paralyzed by the dismal events affecting God’s creation. As Jesus’ disciples, we know God’s grace assures us that we are never forsaken! This blessed assurance of God’s grace, however, requires a faithful response to God. We must allow the Holy Spirit to produce the fruit of love for God and neighbor. We must remain alert enough to share a message of hope to those who are without hope. We must be faithful witnesses of the Light of Jesus for those who need the salvation and deliverance power of God’s Son in their lives. We must practice the Good News of the Gospel for the world to see.
If we are honest, the world’s suffering, our own fiery trials, and the allure of counterfeit gods testing our faith are real battles. Nevertheless, the everlasting, Word of God tells us to “be of good cheer… I have overcome the world.” In today’s language, I can hear with sweet assurance, Jesus says, “Denise. I got this.”
As I write this Lenten devotion, I find myself reflecting on my African American heritage and ancestors whose faith in God through our Lord, Jesus Christ brought them through many hard trials. They even celebrated and praised God during their trials. Perhaps that is why one of my favorite Negro Spirituals, Walk Together Children comes to mind. Today, its lyrics continue to ring out, “walk together children, don’t you get weary. There’s a great camp meeting in the Promise Land!”
By grace, we stand with the faithful witness of the early Christians and other believers who trusted in God’s grace to see them through. May our faithfulness continue to bear witness and fruit for future generations of the power and glory of Jesus Christ, who is our present and soon coming King. Amen.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, today I lift up Christians and nonbelievers far and near who are overwhelmed by personal trials and concerns.

Denise Ryles-McKoy

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Read Mark 13:32 - 37

Why are we commanded to watch for the return of Jesus, our Redeemer, and to be ready for His return? If we have grace and freedom in Jesus (Romans 3:23-26), then what is all of this readiness about? The readiness is so that Jesus will find His Church spotless when He returns (2 Peter 3:14-18) and not “sleeping in the morning.” Morning is symbolic of a time when one is capable of doing work (John 9:3-5). Regardless of the time, we are to be busy about the work of the Lord. The commandment to watch was given to the doorkeeper. All others were to be busy with their duties (ministries). The reference has to do with building the Kingdom of God through obedience and faith in Jesus Christ. I often ask myself if how I serve is the will of God. I can give to the poor, feed the hungry, sing in the choirs, but is that the “work” that the Lord as set for me to do? Our “work” is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is what earns the “incorruptible crowns” we will receive for working in His will (1 Cor 9:24-27). God’s work for us changes as we grow in knowledge of him and as he prunes us to be more productive (John 15:2). Ask yourself what I often ask myself. Is my service in the will of God? When He returns, will He be satisfied with my work (Rev 3:11-12)? Or will He not know me (Matt 7:21-23)?

What ministry do you work at First Church? Can you be in God’s will if you ignore the calling of the Holy Spirit and not serve in a ministry? Pray as I do that the Holy Spirit will guide us in all things each and every day - to do what God wants us to do.

Prayer:
O Father that we might know You better. That You might soften our hearts and our stiff necks. That the work of our hands and the meditations of our hearts might glorify You. That in all that we do is led by You. That we might submit ourselves to Your will, so that Your Kingdom is built. That You might be glad in Your Heart that You redeemed us. Through love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus, we pray.

Amen.

Garnett Lee Henley

Monday, March 29, 2010

Read Mark 14:1 – 32

In the passage we just read, Mary has chosen to anoint Jesus with her most precious oil; in contrast Judas has chosen to sell out Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. We read further about how Jesus at the last supper predicts that Judas would betray him and later at the Mt of Olives Jesus predicts that the disciples would desert him and finally Jesus predicts that even his most dedicated disciple Peter would deny him three times.
Jesus applauded Mary’s act of generosity for she had prepared his body for the coming events. In contrast Jesus condemned Judas and said it would have been better if he had never been born. Most of us would like to have the generous spirit that Mary as we reject the greedy spirit that Judas has. As humans however we should note that we are really a lot more like Judas if given the opportunity most of us will not give away a year’s salary in an instant as Mary did. Looking again at Judas betrayal of Jesus Christ we may feel shocked and enraged, however before passing complete judgment we may need to take a second look at ourselves.
Today we too come to church and take communion on Sunday sharing a meal with our Lord, and then we leave the building and go into the world and immediately start denying Him through our actions. We disobey Him countless times. We say we trust God but our words and actions show otherwise. Professing commitment to Christ but living a life that is contrary to Him is also betraying him.
As human beings we are full of flaws [a polite way of saying sin] in spite of this we should know that we are really blessed because we serve an awesome God whose matchless grace covers all our sins by offering his only son as the sacrifice that would forgive our sins once and for all. Now we can come in full confidence to our Father who hears and forgives our sins. In faith we can turn to God every moment and let him control the life that He has purchased by the precious blood of Jesus Christ his only son.

Prayer:
Dear Father give us courage to give in every way that would be pleasing to you and the courage to flee from all types of greed and any appearance of greed, Take control of our lives so that we can live the abundant life you want us to have in total service to you, We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Amen
Imo Degbo

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Read Mark 14:32-52

It was a most difficult situation that Jesus faced. It was life and death that were in his face, and even in a prayer garden the danger and risk of his life were requiring everything of him. He needed resources, strength, and help to be with him. He goes to prayer to call on God who he knows is calling on him to be faithful in this moment. And, note verse 33, he takes his friends “Peter and James and John with him”; “wait here and keep awake he asks.” As Jesus talks to his Father, he wants his close companions to be close to him…and awake.

Could it be that Jesus is showing us that in every moment of life and most certainly in crucial moments of life, it means everything to have around us those who are our friends? Is this not the basic definition of “friends?” Three times Jesus comes back, interrupting his passionate prayer with his heavenly father, to see if his friends are there with him, awake and praying. When he finds them sleeping he sternly reprimands them: “Could you not stay awake for one hour?” (Verse 37). The meaning, the depth, the requirements of his coming arrest and trial and crucifixion would be made more bearable if they are engaged with the shoulder- to – shoulder presence of those who love him. This is basic to who we are as human beings. In the Garden of Gethsemane, be there for me. In the hour of stress and need, be there for me. When I’m stretched to the limit of my strength and endurance, be there for me. When I must drink from this bitter cup, be there for me. Even as I pray – be there for me. But they are not there. Not in prayer. Not even awake. And as a result, when soldiers come with swords and clubs to arrest Jesus, his friends “all deserted him and run away” (verse 50). And Jesus goes alone to face his trial.

This should never happen. Not to Jesus. Not to Us. Not to anyone. We should never be left alone when life is hard; when we are stretched to the limit; when we are weak; or when we are in need. Jesus seeks to remedy this for us with his promise to be with us always (Matthew 28:16). We can count on that from the One who knows how much it means. And his example asks us to make the same life-supporting commitment to those we know as friends. I will be there awake and praying. You are not alone.

Pastors Joan and David Carter-Rimbach

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Read Mark 14:53-72

Peter Denied Knowing Jesus

As he left Mt. Olives, Jesus was arrested by the chief priests, elders and scribes as if he committed a crime. They took him to the palace of the high priests for trial. The charge, blasphemy for saying he was, Christ, the Son of the Blessed".

Far behind the crowd, Peter followed, entered the palace, sat with the servants near the fire and hid quietly as the chief priests and the council looked for witnesses. Many witnesses came making false statements while Peter continued to watch silently.

The high priest asked Jesus many times, why were the witnesses against him. Jesus didn't answer, he held his peace. Again, they asked Jesus another question, "Art thou the Christ, the son of the Blessed?" Jesus answered saying, I am; and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power and coming into the clouds of heaven."

The high priest angrily ripped Jesus' clothes stating they didn't need any more witnesses, then turned to the council and said, "you have heard it all, what do you think? The council found Jesus guilty and sentenced him to death.

The crowd of people began spitting and striking Jesus. One of the maids recognized Peter and asked if he was one of Jesus' followers. Peter denied, saying he didn't understand what she was saying. At that moment Peter heard a cock crowing. The maid again insisted and spoke to the others stating that he was one of those who followed Jesus. Peter began cursing and swearing saying, "I know not this man of whom you speak," The cock crowed again. Peter then remembered Jesus' saying, "Before the cock crows twice, thou shalt deny me thrice". Peter began to weep.

PRAYER: Lord thank you for sending your precious son to forgive us from our sins.

Hazel Waters

Thursday, April 1, 2010

Read Mark 15:1-20

A Popular Song Writer said " This world is not my own, I am just passing through. Thus as we journey through life we do encounter people as the Chief Priest and the Council Members who make alleged slanderous accusation that could fractured our character.. Mark 15:5 "But Jesus made no reply, so that Pilate was amazed.”Therefore, your response of words or actions will reflect your Christian beliefs and values. As Paul wrote in Psalms 46:10

"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth."

God's peaceful demonstration in the midst of the confusion, ridiculed, mockery by the people who cried out "Crucify him" illustrated to us that whatever confronts us circumstances or people know that the Great Creator lives within to strengthen your faith, power to conquer fear and evil, and to be confident in the knowledge that God will never fail you nor forsake you, and nothing should separated you from the love of God." For I'm persuaded that neither death nor life, nor life, nor angles nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come. Nor heights, nor depth, nor any other created things, shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus."Romans 8: 38-39.

Consequently, as God stood there to the mean name callings, humiliation by taking off his clothing and putting on robe of their choice, spat on him and whisk him away to his death. The fact that God allowed this to happen show the magnitude of his dignity of not rendering evil for evil. Philippians 2:3 &5 indicates “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regards others as yourselves but “Let the mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus."

Let us now go forward in the deeper awareness off God’s omnipresence and infinite love in quite communion aw we affirm:

Dear God, I welcomed your sacred presence for it brings strength to my soul, comfort to my heart, and peace to my mind."For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Avril Wright.

Friday, April 2, 2010

Good Friday

Read Mark 15: 21 - 41

If the people at Jesus' crucifixion were alive when the term Good Friday was coined around the 4th Century, they could or would have asked, "What's good about the day that Jesus was crucified?"
In the midst of his anguish, Jesus cried, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?"
Have you every felt forsaken? The format was predictable. The hero and heroine would get into a tight situation, with evildoers all around them, closing in remorselessly. No way of escape seemed possible. Death loomed with seeming inevitability. And the announcers’ voice would intone “In the next episode, see if they survive!” You were ready to do anything to see the next installment, to see how the story was resolved.
The Gospel of Mark has that same cliffhanger twist ending. Death has been swallowed up in victory. Humiliation has been transformed into triumph. The white-clad messengers’ voice fills us with hope and joy, “He has risen! He is not here.”
But in the last verse, the last two sentences, everything comes unstuck. What should be the beginning of the spread of the greatest good news of Jesus’ resurrection hangs in the balance. “They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.” This ending was so unsatisfactory to some early readers of the text that they wrote other endings and tacked them on. You may have one or two in your Bible.
This Easter day, where does the gospel end – or begin – for you? Are you doing as the messenger said and going and telling of Jesus’ victory over sin, death, hell and evil? Or does fear keep you saying nothing to anyone?
Prayer: Risen Lord Jesus, give us courage to continue the spread of the Good News by telling of your victorious resurrection.

Amen.

Pastor Michael Howes
