Read Mark 10: 17 – 34

In today’s world of airline travel, we have all had experiences and instructions on how much baggage is allowed as we fly from place to place if even it is just for one day. We pack all the things we believe we must have with us on our journey. At times our packing results in more weight than allowed and we willingly pay the extra costs just not to be separated from our stuff. We are allowed to take part of our luggage which we never separate from as carry on, and a claim ticket for the remainder when we arrive at our destination. If our luggage did not arrive, we are also likely to feel disgusted and unhappy.

What a shock it must have been when Jesus told the rich young man, “Go and sell everything you have, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come and follow me”. The young man was promised a treasure in heaven but he became sorrowful after being asked to part with his wealth. Giving up wealth, personal freedoms, and status to serve others seem too great a price for many people. The rich young man did not ask another salvation question, but some of the disciples who did not quite understand what Jesus meant sought clarification from Him.

Jesus is only interested in our hearts, not our belongings, baggage or status. He calls us and invites us to share his kingdom, where we will have life forever, and blessings one hundred times more than we could have on earth. He gave his life for us and all He wants in return is our love and obedience. The moral of the lesson is that we give to get. It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20: 35). By sacrificing the treasures of this world, we will be rewarded many times more in heaven. Our earthly possessions should not come between us and God.

Jesus reminds us to serve others.
