Read Mark 10:1-16
“And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:16)
The movie theater was packed with squirming, fidgety and chattering teens when I took Kara, Katie and six of their friends to the movies recently. I realized that seeing a popular teen movie that came out that Friday night was probably a mistake. I thought I should just go to another movie in the next theater.
I prayed things would settle down. I wasn’t so sure. It had been a exhausting week. The kids had been off from school with all the snow. I had hoped to relax! Finally the film started and, amazingly, the teens stopped their loud talking and laughing and settled down to watch. Every now and then I’d hear a child whisper “wow” or “I just love this”. The preshow chaos turned into ninety minutes of giggles, spontaneous applause and peels of laughter. I caught myself laughing loudly right along with them.
I left the theater feeling rejuvenated. The film had been funny and entertaining, but it was the presence of the children that really lifted my spirit. My grandmother used to say that being in the presence of a child is like sitting with the angels. So until the time comes I guess I’ll be going to lots of teen movies!
During this Lenten season take the time to enjoy all the children in your life and bless them as Jesus blesses us.
